If you’ve ever spent hours creating a digital product only to wonder if anyone actually wants it, you’re not alone. I’ve been there too.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned while building Smart Digital Brand is that creating a product is the easy part. Creating a product that people are already looking for is much harder.
Recently, I decided to stop guessing.
Instead of brainstorming product ideas in a notebook, I started studying what people are watching on YouTube right now.
Not videos from five years ago.
Not videos with millions of lifetime views.
Recent videos.
Here’s What I Did
I searched topics I was interested in and filtered my research to videos published within the last 24 hours to two weeks.
Then I looked for a simple pattern.
Were multiple creators getting thousands—or even tens of thousands—of views on the same topic?
If several recent videos were performing well, that told me one important thing:
People are actively looking for help with that problem today.
That’s a much stronger signal than relying on opinions or trying to predict what might become popular.
The Views Weren’t the Most Interesting Part
At first, I thought I was researching video ideas.
I wasn’t.
I was researching problems.
Every successful video was answering one specific question.
Some helped viewers validate a business idea.
Others explained how to create a digital product, start a YouTube channel, or improve their marketing.
The topic changed.
The pattern didn’t.
Then I Started Looking at the Free Resources
This was the biggest surprise.
Almost every creator offered something free.
But it wasn’t a 50-page ebook.
It wasn’t a giant course.
It wasn’t a complicated workbook.
Instead, it was something simple that solved one specific problem.
One creator offered a prompt that helped validate a niche.
Another shared a template.
Others gave away checklists, scripts, or swipe files.
Each resource helped the viewer accomplish one task quickly.
That changed the way I think about lead magnets.
The Lesson I Learned
For a long time, I thought free products had to be big to be valuable.
Now I think the opposite may be true.
People aren’t necessarily looking for more information.
They’re looking for a faster solution.
A prompt that saves 30 minutes.
A checklist that prevents mistakes.
A template that gets them started.
Sometimes that’s more valuable than a lengthy guide they’ll never finish reading.
My New Approach
Going forward, I’m going to spend less time asking,
“What product should I create?”
And more time asking,
“What problem are people trying to solve right now?”
Once I know the answer, the product becomes much easier to build.
I’m also paying closer attention to what successful creators give away for free, because those resources reveal exactly where their audience gets stuck.
Final Thoughts
This is still something I’m testing, and I don’t have all the answers yet.
But one thing has become clear.
The internet gives us clues every day about what people need. Sometimes all we have to do is slow down, observe the patterns, and let real demand guide what we create next.
If you’re thinking about creating your first digital product, don’t start by designing the product.
Start by looking for the problem.
